Highland Dancing

Highland Dancing is one of the typical Scottish traditions. This type of dancing has no comparisons in the world. Although Scottish dancing shares it’s history with Irish dancing, the uniform and shoes are the only things in common.

Most of the highland dances originate from the military. In the past if someone wanted to join the army, he would have to perform at least one dance. This connection with the military meant that until the start of the 20th century, highland dancing was a sport for men. Presently, there are only a few men who can perform Scottish dancing.

The most famous dances are the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance. The Highland Fling is usually the first dance that is learned by beginners. The moves in this dance form the basis of highland dancing. The Sword Dance is probably the best-known dance. The dancer dances over two crossed swords. This was a victory dance in the past. There are of course many more different dances. The Sean Triubhas, the Hullachan, the Strathspey and Highland Reel, the Flora McDonald Fancy, the Scottish Lilt, the Sailors Hornpipe, the Irish Jig and the Barracks Johnnie are to name but a few.

The Highland Dance Group from the Concord Pipe Band has proved in competition that they have dancing down to a fine art. Through the weekly practice and extra practice with good foreign teachers, they’re well placed to maintain this high level.

Besides the competitions, the dancers give demonstrations during the performances of the Concord Pipe Band. At the performances you can watch the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance being performed.

Scottish Country Dancing

Scottish Country Dancing is a group dance and is usually performed by three and four couples. These types of dances have a social character. Politeness and courtesy are strongly associated with Scottish Country Dancing. The most important thing however, is the enjoyment of dancing with each other.

The dances originate from the old royal French dances. Over the years they became less formal and there are still new dances created for special occasions.
